WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND HOW DID YOU END UP SHOOTING WITH THE AWESOME SIMON BARNES?
I was born in Wolverhampton, just outside of Birmingham. At the Bodypower Expedition this year in May, I was approached by Simon and asked whether I had done fitness modelling before, which I hadn’t. He thought I had potential as a model so we agreed that the date of my first shoot would take place 8 weeks later. This gave me plenty of time to double my efforts in the gym and drop my bodyfat. From when we met to the day of the shoot, I had achieved my goal of 8% body fat from a start of 11-12% and looking a lot leaner.
WAS THIS YOUR FIRST SHOOT?
My first ever shoot was in July 2012 down in London with Simon, and my second was a couple days ago! I was nervous for my first shoot as I was unsure what to expect/how good I would be as model. A few minutes into the shoot though, I was very relaxed, cracking a few jokes and getting the job done! I had no nerves for my second shoot as I knew what to expect and was alot more confident in my physique.
ANY FITNESS MODELS YOU LOOK UP TO OR ASPIRE TO BECOME? ARE YOU YOURSELF PLANNING TO COMPETE ON ANY UPCOMING SHOWS OR BODYBUILDING CONTESTS?
There are plenty of models in the indusry who I look up to and aspire to emulate. WBFF Pro’s James Alexander Ellis and Shuan Stafford have fantastic physiques and I often follow their fitness pages and progress. At the moment I am not entered into any shows or bodybuilding contests, but it certainly will be something that I consider. I was speaking to James the other day asking for advice as to what shows I should start off with and where he first started off. Watch this space… I may enter myself into Miami Pro or Musclemania in 2013!
WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO DO FITNESS MODELING?
A variety of reasons, first of which is been given the opportunity to work with a fantastic photographer like Simon Barnes! Without Simon giving me the opportunity I wouldn’t be where I am today. Fitness has always been a major part of my life ever since I was 14 years old, (when I used to pretend I was 16 so that I could sneak into the gym!) I was a professional rugby player for 2 years after I finished school. Whilst other players in the team would hate the strength and conditioning aspect of the game I loved it more than anyone and would relish the opportunity to get into the gym. Fitness modelling is a passion of mine now; it is something that I love and hopefully will continue to do for many years to come. The motivation that comes with being a fitness model is to live a healthy lifesyle and to dedicate myself in making sure that I stay ontop of my physique. If I can earn money and have photoshoots along the way, then thats great!!
ANY MAGAZINES, BLOGS OR BOOKS YOU FREQUENT TO KEEP YOU ABREAST IN THE FIELD OF FITNESS?
I’m a qualified Poliquin Biosignature Level 1 Practitioner. I actually qualified earlier this year and I am a huge fan of Charles Poliquin’s work! Since then, I have applied many of his apporaches with regards to nutrition and training to help get me into the shape that I am today. In my personal training, I have adapted my client’s nutrition plans in line with Poliquin methods to optimise their results also. So I regularly read his blogs which contain the latest research and I am also keen to learn from anyone else who has the same mindset and level of knowledge. e.g. Nick Mitchell and Phil Learney.
WHERE DO YOU THINK YOUR FITNESS MODELING CAREER IS HEADED, LET’S SAY, A YEAR FROM NOW?
In a years time I would love to be a fully sponsored athlete by a supplement company. I have received a brilliant response off the back of my first shoot, which includes offers from supplement companies and work as a fitness model. Hopefully this is a sign that I am heading in the right direction and things are progressing well for me. After signing with a company, I would love to be featured in a magazine, start to build my reputation as a fitness model in the industry as well as a trainer. Also in 2013 I would like to compete in a fitness show or competition as mentioned earlier.
WHAT SPECIFIC STEPS ARE YOU TAKING TO PROMOTE YOURSELF AND GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE?
Since my first shoot in July I have started my own fitness page (find the link below) which is generating a great following so far even though it is still in its early stages. As well as that I have just had my second shoot and hopefully soon will be a sponsored athlete in the very near future which will help me to raise my profile in the industry. Other than that I am looking on building my own website in the next few months and improving my use of social media sites such as facebook and twitter. I’m always on the look out to invest in my knowledge and qualifications and continually learn more by doing CPD courses throughout the year.
