Just go to Luis Rafael’s Facebook News Feed and you could guess who will be the next big thing in fitness modeling. Truly, Luis has been the discoverer of sort for the fitness world when it comes and there are days when amongst the sea of highly competitive male fitness models (all of whom are top-notch in their class), there are still those who simply stands out. Introducing Derron Matthew McLaury, a small-town Michigan native who captivated our eyes and made us wonder of how he became an aspiring and now, true male fitness model.
FIRST AND FOREMOST, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO FITNESS MODELING?
Well for me, I was first inspired when I took a look at fitness magazines. I was blown away with the physique and structure they had. As soon as I bought the magazine I told myself, one day I will be on a cover of a magazine! And I am still driven to achieve that goal I have set for myself.
TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF. WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
I’m from a very small town of Adrian, Michigan. Nothing too special, but almost everyone know everyone here. I was born in Jackson, Michigan and pretty much lived in Michigan my whole life. But a little about me: I’m a very driven person and outgoing. I know what I want and I’m gonna go for it! I believe that there is no limit to what you can achieve other than the limits you put on yourself. I am also a very active person. I love working out, love my family and friends, God, jumping out of airplanes, and I feel like I’m a genuinely blessed guy.
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR PASSION FOR FITNESS?
I believe I have always had a passion for fitness. I was always in sports in High School and is very athletic. However, I really discovered my love for fitness when I went to the gym the very first time with my older brother. He showed me the ropes and from there on, I was hooked! It’s almost like it was in my blood. But now it has only become habit to continue my path of living a fit and healthy lifestyle.
HOW CAN ONE PERSON, WHO MAY HAVE NEVER LIFTED A DUMBBELL OR AWARE OF WHAT HE’S EATING BEGIN THE PROCESS OF BEING HEALTHY?
Well nowadays, it’s kinda easier to be more informed on how to workout compared to the older days where you had to experience things for yourself. But good thing is if you have never lifted or inexperienced in a lot of places, there’s a lot of information on how to workout at YouTube, Bodybuilding.com and other places. But starting anything is the hardest part. Once you continue the process and stay consistent, it becomes a habit and that’s what a lot of people fail to realize.
WHAT’S YOUR DEFINITION OF A HEALTHY PERSON?
Someone who is aware of their health, exercises and takes care of there bodies and does not make excuses for being lazy and why they cannot achieve the body they want. The only thing excuses are gonna get you is absolutely nothing. But people that are driven and motivated are the ones that achieve things in this world. You only live once, live it to the fullest!
WHAT DO YOU DO DAILY TO KEEP YOURSELF FIT AND HEALTHY?
Well fitness is a lifestyle for me, so that being said I workout 5-6 days a week, make healthy choices, and follow a strict diet. It’s a habit almost at times. I don’t have to think about it because I have been doing it for so long. But being fit and healthy is no easy task by any means. Workouts are intense and sometimes lots of pain in a good way, but that’s the price you have to pay to stay in shape and obviously you have to eat well or all that hard work you put into the gym is all in vain.
WHERE WILL DERRON BE A YEAR FROM NOW?
I’m very optimistic, so in a year I would want to be on a cover of a fitness magazine, a sponsored athlete, and an inspiration to people to show that dreams can come true. Anything is possible, you just have to keep yourself motivated and see the end goal.
WHAT MAKES YOU DO WHAT YOU DO? WHAT DRIVES YOU TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN?
Simply put determination, and never being satisfied, it’s a blessing and a curse. This mindset is what keeps me going to always improve on something. I must never settle for less than what I am worth.
